As Sheriff, Prawns, etc

In the late 60s, early 70s, I played in rock band in Victoria called As Sheriff. About 20 years ago a local music archivist, Jason Flower, started a project of collecting recordings from the band with the intention of producing an album. 20 years later his efforts came to fruition and the album, Six Ways to the Ace was released.

A couple of weeks ago a record release party was held. In attendance were many of my musical contemporaries from the past and the few remaining band members. Five of the former members have passed on.

Me, Rod Evans, a guitarist who was with the band for a time, Reid Hudson, our first bass player and Jason Flower in front.

Here is a newspaper write up with the background on the project: https://www.timescolonist.com/entertainment/music-archivist-unearths-rare-60s-recordings-by-victoria-rockers-as-sheriff-7107070

Interview at CBC.

This has been an amazing experience and gives me a new perspective on the band and validates the legitimacy of of our creative efforts.

Shortly after returning from Mexico I got a call from Frank Hudson, younger brother of Reid, the bass player. A few years ago he suggested that I go out fishing with him on his boat but that didn’t happen, until now. He invited me to go prawning with him it being the spot prawn season. Spot prawns and super tasty and sweet so I jumped at the chance and, one morning, we set out to see what was in his traps. First we stopped by his crab traps and pulled out a few red rock crabs then proceeded to the prawn traps where we managed to harvest 110 prawns for each of the three of us. That night Kathryn was just returning from Mexico and we had a feast of crab and prawns to welcome her home. Those 110 prawns didn’t last long.

This is Finlayson Arm from where we set out.
